Student Exchange Program: Chinese Government Scholarship support for scholars under university partnerships

Student Exchange Program is one of four scholarship categories in Section I of the Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, published by the China Scholarship Council. It is launched under exchange and cooperation agreements between Chinese universities and foreign partners, and it supports general and senior scholars for a training session of no more than 12 months. Section I lists four scholarship categories: the Bilateral Program (Section I, item (I)), the University Program (Section I, item (II)), the Designated Scholarship Programs (Section I, item (III)) and the Student Exchange Program (Section I, item (IV)).

What the official text says

Section I, item (IV) of the Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship states the following.

  • Basis: the program is launched in accordance with exchange and cooperation agreements between Chinese universities and foreign partners.
  • Who it supports: general and senior scholars.
  • Length: a training session of no more than 12 months.
  • Where to file: an applicant files an application with Chinese universities and their foreign partners.

Section I, item (IV) names no stipend amount.

Eligibility lines for the two scholar categories are in Section IV of the same guide.

  • General scholars: Section IV, item 5 states that an applicant must be a holder of a high school diploma (or higher) under the age of 45 when applying for a general scholar program.
  • Senior scholars: Section IV, item 6 states that an applicant must be a master's degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for a senior scholar program.

The stipend lines are in Section III, item 3 of the same guide.

  • The line that names general scholars reads: Master's students/general scholars: CNY 3,000 per month.
  • The line that names senior scholars reads: Doctoral students/senior scholars: CNY 3,500 per month.

For Chinese-taught programs, Section IV sets language conditions as conditions of the Chinese Government Scholarship.

  • Section IV, item 8 states that an applicant must have passed the HSK (Level 3) when applying for a Chinese-taught general scholar program (excluding Chinese language majors).
  • Section IV, item 9 states that an applicant must have passed the HSK (Level 3) when applying for a Chinese-taught senior scholar program.

Section I, item (IV) gives no application deadline.
