Student insurance: the compulsory insurance system for international students

Student insurance (国际学生全员保险制度) is the full-coverage insurance system that Article 40 of the Measures for the Administration of Schools Recruiting and Educating International Students (Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security) requires schools to implement. Under Article 40, each international student must insure as national rules and school requirements provide, and the article links non-compliance to admission and registration (see Admission and documents).

Order No. 42, Article 40
- The school implements the full-coverage insurance system for international students.
- International students must insure in accordance with national rules and school requirements.
- For students who have not bought insurance as required, a time limit for insuring is set (应限期投保).
- If a student does not insure by that time limit, the school does not admit the student (学校不予录取).
- For students already studying at the school, the school dismisses them from study (退学) or does not register them (不予注册).
Quality Standards for the Higher Education of International Students in China (Trial), section 15.4
- Higher education institutions implement the full-coverage insurance system for international students in accordance with Order No. 42.
- They ensure that international students have insurance protection meeting the prescribed requirements during their study.
- They provide the necessary insurance-related assistance.
These are trial standards (试行). Section 15.4 uses "shall" (应当) for the institution's duties.
Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, section III, item 4
Comprehensive medical insurance is one of the coverage items listed in section III for this scholarship. The amounts are:

Section III gives these amounts without a year. This is a benefit of the Chinese Government Scholarship, published by China Scholarship Council (Campus China). It is not a general rule for self-funded students.
